Frankl was a Viennese psychiatrist who spent the war in Auschwitz and three other camps, and lost his wife, his mother and his father there. Man's Search for Meaning was written in nine days afterwards. His conclusion is not that suffering is good but that the last freedom — how you meet what is done to you — is never taken.
